1. KTX & SRT — High-Speed Rail

The fastest and most popular way to travel between Korean cities. KTX and SRT reach speeds of up to 300 km/h. Unlike flights, you depart from the city center and skip airport procedures entirely.

Which Station Should You Use?

You don't have to go all the way to Seoul Station. Choose the station closest to your accommodation.

KTX stations:

SRT stations (Gangnam & southern Gyeonggi):

Tip: If you're staying in Ilsan, Goyang, or northern Gyeonggi — use Haengsin Station. You'll save 40+ minutes compared to going to Seoul Station first.

How to Book Tickets

Option 1 — Global travel apps (easiest for foreigners): Use Trip.com or Klook. Book in your own language and pay with your foreign card. Note: small service fee applies, and allocated seats sell out fast.

Option 2 — Station ticket counter (most reliable): Visit the ticket window at any train station a few days in advance. Staff can often find remaining seats that appear sold out on apps. Bring your passport.

Option 3 — KR Pass (best for multiple trips): If you plan to ride KTX multiple times within a short period, the KR Pass (foreigner-only unlimited rail pass) is a great deal. Note: KR Pass is not valid on SRT.

Critical Rules You Must Know

No ticket gates — it's a trust system: Unlike the subway, KTX and SRT stations have no QR gates or turnstiles. When it's time to board, check the departure board for your track number and walk straight to your seat. After departure, a conductor will verify tickets with a handheld device.

2. GTX — Seoul Metropolitan Express Rail

The newest addition to Seoul's transit system — a subway that moves like a bullet train. GTX runs 40–50 meters underground at up to 180 km/h, dramatically cutting travel time from suburbs to the city center.

GTX-A Route (currently available)

North → Seoul: Unjeong Jungang → KINTEX → Daegok → Yeonsinnae → Seoul Station

Gangnam → South Gyeonggi: Suseo (SRT transfer) → Seongnam → Guseong → Dongtan

2026 Note: Samsung Station (COEX area) is still under construction and trains pass through without stopping. To reach Gangnam, transfer to the regular subway at Suseo or Seoul Station.

How to Ride GTX

No advance booking needed. Just tap your T-money card or WOWPASS at the gate — exactly like the regular subway. Transfer discounts to buses and metro lines apply as usual.

3. ITX & Mugunghwa-ho — Conventional Intercity Trains

Slower, cheaper, and more scenic than KTX. These trains stop at smaller towns KTX doesn't reach, and offer beautiful countryside views along the way.

ITX-Cheongchun — Korea's only double-decker train

Route: Seoul (Yongsan / Cheongnyangni) → Gapyeong (Nami Island) → Chuncheon. This is the recommended train for visiting Nami Island (Gapyeong) and Chuncheon. Book a 2nd floor seat for the best views.

ITX-Saemaeul / ITX-Maeum — Best value intercity

Mid-range between KTX and Mugunghwa-ho. Comfortable, wide seats at lower prices than KTX. Great when KTX is fully booked or doesn't stop at your destination.

Mugunghwa-ho — The retro budget train

Stops at every small town along the route. Very affordable fares. Best for slow travel and watching Korea's countryside pass by.

If you have a KR Pass, it's valid on ITX-Saemaeul, ITX-Maeum, and Mugunghwa-ho. Discounts also apply to tourist trains.

4. Tourist Trains — Ride the Scenery

These trains are the destination, not just the transport. Oversized panoramic windows, seats facing the mountains or ocean, and one-of-a-kind landscapes.
